SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Heritage Trail is being promoted as one of the town's key attractions under the Visit Malaysia 2026 campaign.
Sandakan Heritage Trail founder and chairman Lai King Hang said heritage tourism remains the essence of Sandakan, with the two-hour self-guided trail showcasing the town's historic landmarks.
Established in 2003, the community-led initiative also became the first Historical Tree Trail in Malaysia to be recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records in 2025, featuring 42 tagged trees with QR codes.
Lai recently accompanied Tourism Malaysia Production Division Director Mohd Shahrir Mohd Ali and other officials to document the trail as part of promotional efforts for Visit Malaysia 2026.
Free trail maps are available at Sandakan Airport, Hotel Sandakan and selected hotels for visitors wishing to explore the heritage route.
