Kota Kinabalu: The Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) will launch the Sabah Energy Efficiency Action Plan (SEEAP) and the Solar Rakyat Sabah programme at the end of July to promote energy efficiency and encourage more households to generate their own electricity.

ECoS Chief Executive Officer Datuk Ir Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid said SEEAP is a 10-year roadmap developed in collaboration with government agencies and industry stakeholders to promote more efficient energy use across Sabah.

He said the plan focuses not only on increasing electricity supply but also on encouraging consumers to use energy more efficiently.

“The action plan has been completed and is scheduled to be launched at the end of July.

The 2026 D-MAX also introduces an 8-speed automatic gearbox with sequential shift across the range, including the Single Cab variant, making it the first pick-up truck in Malaysia to offer an automatic transmission in that body style.
“At the same event, we will also launch the Solar Rakyat Sabah programme, which will allow homeowners to install rooftop solar systems to generate electricity for their own use and sell any surplus power back to Sabah Electricity (SE),” he told reporters after paying a courtesy call on Sabah Head of State Tun Musa Aman at Istana Seri Kinabalu on Wednesday.

Abdul Nasser said the visit was to invite Tun Musa to officiate the launch of both initiatives.

Explaining the Solar Rakyat Sabah programme, he said it adopts the “prosumer” concept, under which consumers become both electricity users and producers.

He said, for example, a household that consumes 1,000 units of electricity but generates 1,500 units through rooftop solar panels can sell the surplus 500 units to SE, with the value credited against its electricity bill.

“The concept is not new and has already been implemented in other parts of Malaysia. However, this will be the first time it is introduced in Sabah through ECoS in collaboration with SE and other stakeholders.

“The programme also includes financing options to help reduce the cost of installing solar systems, which can be expensive for many households,” he said.

Abdul Nasser urged consumers to take advantage of the initiative, describing it as a practical way to manage rising electricity costs while supporting the transition to cleaner and more sustainable energy.

Also present were ECoS Chief Operating Officer Ir Ts Ridwan Saham and Deputy Chief Executive Officer Ernie Zainie.
