Hospital Mesra Bukit Padang Board committed to help mental patients recover

Kota Kinabalu: Members of the Hospital Mesra Bukit Padang (HMBP) Board of Visitors are committed to helping patients suffering from mental illness to recover and return to society.

Its Chairwoman Datuk Dr Christina Rundi said the effort includes two main steps, which are to help HMBP in the rehabilitation programme and then to change the stigma of society towards recovering patients.

“Our aim, especially HMBP Board members, is to help hospitals in their rehabilitation programmes by returning patients who suffer from mental illness to recover and return to their lives in the family, society and also life as an individual in a community.

“After recovery, we will hold various programmes for them and the community with the main aim of removing the stigma about mentally ill patients even though we know it is a rather long and difficult process considering that it not only comes from the patient himself but also from the family, the community as well as those who adhere to policies related to mental illness,” he said after paying a courtesy call on Sabah Head of State Tun Juhar Mahiruddin at Istana Seri Kinabalu, here, Tuesday.

The courtesy visit aims to introduce the newly-appointed HMBP Board of Visitors for 2023 to 2026 to Juhar.

Meanwhile, HMBP Director Dr Firdaus Abdul Aziz said the intended treatment process also received various support to achieve a good level of recovery.

“At HMBP, the treatment we provide is also supported by occupational therapy, physiotherapy, counsellors and psychologists aimed at achieving recovery from various aspects such as psychological, mental and physical.

“All the programmes implemented are running smoothly. From all of this, I think the treatment seems to be not only aimed at medicine but also at the psychological aspect called rehabilitation,” he added.
