BANGKOK: A Thai court has remanded a homeless man accused of slashing a Vietnamese woman in Bangkok after police said he attacked her because he disliked overweight people, although the suspect later denied that was his motive,
Khaosod English reported.
The 30-year-old suspect, identified only as Esana (
pic), or "Film", allegedly attacked the 29-year-old woman, identified as Nguyen Thi Ngoc Tram, with a box cutter outside a convenience store in Silom on June 27, leaving her with injuries requiring 14 stitches.
Police said the suspect initially told investigators he targeted the woman because of her body size, but later claimed in court that he heard voices in his head and denied hating overweight people.
The Criminal Court approved a 12-day remand after police opposed bail, citing concerns over public safety and the risk of reoffending while further investigations, including a psychiatric assessment, are carried out.
The Vietnamese woman later identified the suspect, who faces a charge of causing bodily harm, while police continue their investigation.
