Kota Kinabalu: Kian Kok Middle School’s String Orchestra delivered an outstanding performance at its annual concert, A Journey Through Time, held on July 4 at the school hall, captivating a full audience of parents, alumni, supporters and members of the public.
The concert was officiated by the school’s Honorary Board Advisor, Karen Lee, who joined sponsors in a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially launch the event.
Board Chairman Datuk Clement Yeh congratulated the students on their remarkable performance, praising not only their musical standard but also the discipline, dedication and teamwork they demonstrated throughout months of preparation.
He said the audience enjoyed more than two hours of inspiring music, but behind every performance were countless hours of rehearsals, commitment and perseverance.
“Music education goes beyond learning an instrument. It nurtures discipline, confidence, responsibility and teamwork, all of which are essential qualities for our students’ future,” he said.
Clement added that Kian Kok Middle School remains committed to holistic education by encouraging students to pursue excellence in both academics and co-curricular activities.
He noted that the school’s achievements in music, sports, innovation and academic competitions reflected its commitment to developing well-rounded individuals.
In her speech, Karen described music as a universal language capable of connecting people across cultures and generations. She said learning music provides students with valuable life lessons that extend far beyond the concert stage.
“A successful performance is built on patience, perseverance and countless hours of practice. Through music, students develop focus, self-discipline and resilience, qualities that will benefit them throughout their lives,” she said.
Karen also highlighted the importance of teamwork in an orchestra, saying that every musician plays an equally important role in creating harmony.
“An orchestra succeeds not because of one outstanding performer, but because every member listens, supports and works together. These experiences help shape character and prepare young people to face future challenges with confidence,” she said.
One of the highlights of this year’s concert was the collaboration between the school’s String Orchestra, Wind Band and Choir. The specially formed Youth Symphony Orchestra combined string and wind musicians, while choir members joined selected performances, creating a richer musical experience and showcasing the strong spirit of cooperation among the school’s performing arts groups.
Clement expressed his appreciation to the orchestra instructor, teacher advisors, students, parents, sponsors, volunteers and backstage crew for their dedication and support in making the concert a success.
He said A Journey Through Time marked another important milestone in the school’s music programme and expressed confidence that the String Orchestra would continue to grow, participate in more performances and cultural exchanges, and inspire future generations through the power of music.
“The most memorable part of tonight was not only the beautiful music performed on stage, but also the shared journey of students, teachers and parents working together towards a common goal. That spirit is what makes education truly meaningful,” he said.
