KENINGAU: Communities throughout Tambunan are set to benefit from improved facilities for organising local events following the introduction of the “One Canopy, One Mukim” initiative.
The initiative, introduced by PGRS Tambunan division chief Datuk Victor Peter Paut, is part of the party’s ongoing commitment to strengthening grassroots community development by providing practical facilities that can be shared and utilised by residents across the district.

Under the programme, each mukim (sub-district) in Tambunan will receive a canopy that can be used for a wide range of community activities, including cultural celebrations, religious gatherings, weddings, welfare programmes, community meetings and other social events.
According to Victor, the initiative is designed to ease the financial burden on village communities by reducing the need to rent canopies from private providers whenever local programmes are organised.
“We want every mukim to have its own canopy so that community activities can be organised more easily and at a lower cost. This facility belongs to the community and is intended to benefit everyone,” he said.
The programme has been implemented in phases since 2024 and forms part of PGRS Tambunan’s broader efforts to improve basic community facilities while enhancing the quality of life in rural areas.
He said the initiative goes beyond simply providing physical infrastructure, as it is also intended to strengthen social cohesion, encourage volunteerism and reinforce the long-standing tradition of mutual cooperation among the people of Tambunan.
“When communities share facilities, they are not only saving costs but also creating more opportunities to work together, strengthen relationships and organise meaningful programmes that benefit everyone,” he said.
Victor, who is also Deputy Chairman of Sawit Kinabalu Group and Borneo Samudera Sdn Bhd, encouraged any mukim that has yet to receive its canopy allocation to contact the PGRS Tambunan office during office hours for further coordination and distribution arrangements.
Tambunan district comprises seven mukims – Sunsuron, Kirokot, Patau, Lintuhun, Monsorulung, Nambayan and Toboh – covering a total of 77 villages.
He noted that while a canopy may appear to be a simple facility, it represents an important community asset in rural areas where public infrastructure is often limited.
Besides serving as a venue for social and cultural gatherings, it can also be utilised during emergencies, welfare activities and disaster response efforts.
“When communities have access to shared facilities, they become more motivated to organise activities that bring people together. Ultimately, everyone benefits from a stronger, more united community,” he said.
