THE JOURNEY for the 48 teams participating in the 2026 World Cup finals has finally come to an end, with Spain emerging as the champion after a thrilling tournament hosted by Mexico, the USA, and Canada. 

Spain clinched the coveted title by defeating Argentina 1-0 in a final match played at New York New Jersey Stadium that showcased their exceptional flair and skill.

The winning goal was scored by winger Ferran Torres in the 106th minute of extra time, firing a first-time shot into the roof of the net after receiving a headed pass from substitute Nico Williams.

Throughout the tournament, Spain demonstrated a superior performance, earning them well-deserved recognition on the global stage. 

The final, however, had left many spectators astonished as Argentina played a poor game. The lack of attempts at goal by Argentina throughout the match was particularly shocking, raising questions about their tactics and strategy during this pivotal game.

While Argentina had previously showcased resilience, coming from behind to beat England in the semi-finals, their lackluster performance in the finals was a stark contrast. 

Only after Spain took the lead did they show signs of life, ramping up their offensive play in the last 15 minutes, but it was too little, too late.

As the dust settles on this formidable competition, I noted that Asian countries had put on a good show. They are no longer there just to make up the numbers, which is a positive sign for the future of the sport. 

Both Japan and Australia made it to the knockout stage by finishing second in their respective groups with some inspiring performances, while South Korea and Iran narrowly missed advancing as top third-place finishers.

Sadly, the same cannot be said for the once mighty Brazil, whose diminishing dominance in football has become evident as they struggle to inspire fear in their opponents. 

They needed a last-gasp winner from Gabriel Martinelli in the 96th minute to beat Japan 2-1 in the round of 32 before eventually losing 1-2 to Norway in the round of 16.
