Kota Kinabalu: The Institute of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) Sabah Branch has called for an integrated engineering approach and comprehensive technical assessment to strengthen flood resilience in Tawau following the recent floods that affected residents and businesses in the district.
Its Chairman, Ir. Ts. Tan KJ said the recent flooding highlighted the need for a multidisciplinary and evidence-based approach to flood management, involving hydrology, drainage infrastructure, river systems, land use planning, environmental management and urban development.
He said building long-term flood resilience can only be achieved through sound engineering practices, integrated planning and close collaboration among all relevant stakeholders.
“The recent flooding underscores the importance of undertaking a comprehensive technical assessment to better understand the factors contributing to such events.
“As the professional body representing engineers in Sabah, IEM Sabah is prepared to assist the State Government and relevant agencies by providing independent technical expertise and multidisciplinary engineering input where appropriate,” Tan said.
He said the institution stands ready to contribute towards developing practical and sustainable flood mitigation strategies for the state.
“IEM Sabah firmly believes that effective collaboration between government agencies, engineering professionals, academia, industry and the community is essential to strengthening Sabah’s resilience against future flood events.
“Through evidence-based planning, resilient infrastructure and sustainable development practices, we can collectively work towards reducing flood risks and enhancing the well-being of our communities,” he said.
Tan reiterated IEM Sabah’s commitment to advancing engineering excellence and contributing professionally to the sustainable development and resilience of Sabah.
At the same time, he said IEM Sabah expressed its deepest sympathy to all residents, businesses and communities affected by the floods, acknowledging the hardships and disruptions experienced by those impacted.
“We recognise the hardships and disruption experienced by those impacted and stand in solidarity with the affected communities during this challenging time,” he said.
Tan also conveyed IEM Sabah’s appreciation to emergency responders, including the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), Civil Defence Force (APM), medical personnel, local authorities, volunteers and individuals involved in rescue and recovery efforts.
