Kota Kinabalu: Breakfast diners fled a food court at Bataras Kolombong after a fire broke out at about 11am on Wednesday, with one person taken to hospital after attempting to put out the blaze.

The fire started at the Kak Yan kitchen stall on the first floor of the food court, which was crowded with customers at the time, and triggered the building's sprinkler system.

Chicken rice seller Pauline Chong said a person tried to extinguish the fire but was unsuccessful and later fainted before being taken to hospital, while customers rushed out without finishing their meals.

Chong said four of her whole fried chickens were ruined after being soaked by water from the sprinkler system and that she intended to give them away free, while the stall next to hers was completely destroyed in the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
