Kota Kinabalu: Merging the Bajau Laut’s maritime experience with scientific methodologies can help Sabah establish a more thorough, sustainable and effective Blue Economy, according to engineering technologist Dr Janifal Alipal.
“The Blue Economy aims to make use of marine resources while sustainably safeguarding ocean ecosystems. This is where the Bajau Laut’s expertise comes in handy,” said the DPBS Holdings Sdn Bhd Chief Technology Officer, who is of Bajau Laut descent.
Janifal said the Bajau Laut’s maritime knowledge is based on years of lived experience and a broad knowledge of the marine ecosystem.
“For centuries, my Bajau Laut community has lived directly on and with the ocean, developing knowledge that goes far beyond scientific observations,” he said at a recent Colloquium on Identity Issues in Sabah’s Plenary Session 2: Behind the Labels: Understanding the Human Experience of Statelessness at the Sabah International Convention Centre, here.
