BEIJING: A 23-year-old man in China has regained a normal scalp after undergoing an 11-month treatment for a rare condition that caused it to resemble the folds of a human brain.
According to the
South China Morning Post (
SCMP), the man was diagnosed with cutis verticis gyrata, a rare condition that causes the scalp to thicken and develop deep folds.
The condition had affected half of his scalp since he was 14.
Doctors at Zhongnan Hospital of Wuhan University implanted tissue expanders beneath healthy scalp tissue, gradually stretching the skin over 11 months before performing a three-hour operation to remove the abnormal tissue.
The operation was successful, allowing hair to grow normally again and restoring the man's scalp to a normal appearance.
The case drew praise online, with many commending the medical team for helping improve the patient's confidence and quality of life.
