TAWAU: The flood disaster in Tawau was officially declared over on Monday after three days by Tawau Municipal Council president Mohd Shoffian Mohd Said, who is also District Disaster Management Committee (JPBD) chairman.
He announced the end of the disaster at 2pm after confirming that the situation had fully recovered based on reports and field information received from agencies under the JPBD.
The district was declared a flood disaster at 8.30am last Saturday after nine hours of continuous heavy rain from 2am coincided with high tide, causing widespread flooding in villages, housing estates, plantations and roads.
The flooding affected many parts of Tawau, including several low-lying areas that had not previously experienced floods, with badly hit locations including Takada to Batu 15 Jalan Apas, Jalan Tanjung Batu, Jalan Kuhara, Jalan Chong Thien Vun, Jalan Sin On, Jalan Air Panas, Jalan Utara and Balung, while traffic congestion was reported on major roads and alternative routes linking the town centre with Tawau Airport.
A temporary relief centre at the Tawau Sports Complex Multipurpose Hall, which sheltered 362 victims from 102 households from Kg Tanjung Batu Keramat Asli, Kg Tanjung Batu Darat (Ozzy) and Kg Tanjung Batu Keramat Asli (Otentik), was officially closed on Monday following the declaration that the flood disaster had ended.
