TAWAU: Some 5,578 water consumers here are affected following the temporary shutdown of the Apas Balung 1 and 2, Utara and Cinta Mata Water Treatment Plants (WTP) due to flooding in the district on Saturday.
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam said the Apas Balung 1 and 2 WTP operations had to be stopped after the plant area was fully submerged, causing damage to facilities and key mechanical and electrical components.
He said the operations and technical teams from the Tawau Division Water Department were carrying out a full inspection, plant cleaning works and repairs to the affected components to ensure the Apas Balung 1 and 2 WTPs could resume safe operations.

Dr Joachim who is also State Works and Utility Minister, said the Utara and Cinta Mata WTPs had resumed operations, with treated water production being increased in stages to help stabilise supply to consumers.
He said the Tawau Division Water Department had also activated a temporary mitigation plan, including the delivery of water supply using water tanker lorries to affected areas, to reduce the impact of the supply disruption.
He said the Sabah Water Department acknowledged and understood the difficulties faced by consumers due to the disruption and was carrying out various measures to restore water supply as soon as possible.

“This issue is being monitored continuously by the Department’s management and technical team,” he said.
He said the Department assured that efforts were being intensified to speed up the recovery process and ensure the water supply system could be stabilised quickly.
