Kota Kinabalu: Residents of Bukit Punai are appealing to the Sabah government to gazette their settlement as an officially recognised village, saying the move would enable hundreds of long-term residents to gain access to basic utilities and government infrastructure after more than three decades of living without formal recognition.
Community representative Kan Sing @ Fidelis Gusin said their community has existed for more than 30 years and is home to about 300 residents, adding that 35 houses in the settlement have been officially numbered by Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK).
He believes the actual number of houses now exceeds 40, as additional homes have been built since the last numbering exercise.
“We ask that this village be gazetted because most of the people living here are poor,” he told Daily Express on Monday.
