TAWAU: Parti Warisan Health Bureau Chief Dr Istefan Koh wants the Federal and State governments and all relevant agencies to give a clear and transparent explanation on the actual status of the Tawau Flood Mitigation Project, seven years after it was announced.
“Explain the actual status of this project, the new completion timeline, the name of the contractor responsible, the progress achieved so far and the steps being taken to speed up implementation,” he said in a statement, Monday.
He said seven years was not short and the people of Tawau had waited long enough.
He said the flooding situation in Tawau had not improved but worsened over the years, with areas that were never previously affected now experiencing flooding, while areas already known to be high risk suffered even more serious effects.
He said residents had repeatedly suffered losses when their homes were flooded, business premises damaged, roads rendered impassable, schools disrupted and daily life brought to a standstill whenever heavy rain and flooding occurred.
“After seven years, what is the actual status of this project. What is the current physical progress percentage. Is the project still on its original schedule or has it experienced significant delays. If there have been delays, what is the cause and who should be held responsible,” he said.
“We also want to know which company has been appointed as the main contractor for the Tawau Flood Mitigation Project, when the contract was awarded, what scope of work has been completed so far and whether the implementation of the project is monitored regularly by the ministry and related agencies.
“If the contractor failed to meet the set targets or schedule, what action has the government taken,” he said.
He said these questions were to ensure transparency and accountability in the use of public funds.
He said the Flood Mitigation Project involved a large allocation and was important to the safety and wellbeing of Tawau residents.
