TAWAU: Students involved in two recent fighting and rioting cases in the district who have been released on police bail are continuing to attend school while investigations and the relevant disciplinary processes remain ongoing, Sabah Education Department Director Datuk Raisin Saidin said.
He said schools remained responsible for ensuring students continued to receive education and guidance, adding that disciplinary measures, including suspension, could be imposed where appropriate without amounting to expulsion, as students retained the right to appeal.
Raisin said the education system was intended to guide students towards positive behavioural change rather than jeopardise their future, while the department and the schools had fully cooperated with the authorities in investigating the recent cases in Tawau.
He said incidents occurring within school grounds fell under the responsibility of the school, whereas offences committed outside school premises also involved breaches of national law, and teachers and schools should not be held solely responsible for such incidents.
Raisin added that cooperation between schools and the Royal Malaysia Police was continuously strengthened through school liaison officers, while a report on another alleged bullying case involving three students had been submitted to the Ministry of Education for further action after the department completed its investigation.
