RANAU: A total of 1,099 student-athletes representing 24 District Education Offices (PPDs) from across Sabah have begun competing in the 58th Sabah Schools Sports Council (MSSS) Athletics Championships, which officially got underway at the Ranau Sports Complex on Sunday.
The six-day championship, running until July 24, brings together the State’s finest school athletes to compete in more than 20 track and field events across various age categories.

Widely regarded as Sabah’s premier schools athletics meet, the annual championship serves as the main platform for identifying emerging sporting talent while strengthening the long-term development of athletics at the grassroots level.
The official opening ceremony was officiated by Sabah Deputy Chief Minister I and Minister of Works and Utilities Datuk Seri Dr. Joachim Gunsalam, represented by his Political Secretary, Datuk Arthur Sen Siong Choo.
In his opening message, participants were encouraged to compete with discipline, integrity and sportsmanship while striving to achieve excellence for their respective districts.
All 24 District Education Offices are represented at this year’s championship, namely Sipitang, Kuala Penyu, Beaufort, Papar, Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Tuaran, Lahad Datu, Kota Belud, Kota Marudu, Pitas, Kudat, Kinabatangan, Beluran, Ranau, Telupid, Semporna, Kunak, Tawau, Sandakan, Keningau, Tenom, Nabawan and Tambunan.

As the host district, Ranau fields the largest contingent with 80 athletes, while Nabawan has the smallest delegation, comprising 13 athletes.
Competition is expected to be particularly intense as defending champions Tawau District Schools Sports Council (MSSD Tawau) return to defend the overall title they secured during the 57th MSSS Athletics Championships held in Tambunan last year.
At the previous edition, Tawau emerged as overall champions after collecting 15 gold medals, followed by MSSD Keningau in second place and MSSD Kota Kinabalu in third.
Beyond the race for medals and the coveted overall championship trophy, the championships play a far greater role in Sabah’s sporting ecosystem.
The meet serves as the primary selection platform for athletes who will go on to represent Sabah at the Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) Championships, offering promising young talents the opportunity to compete on the national stage.
For many participants, the event represents months of rigorous training, dedication and sacrifice. Athletes have undergone intensive preparation under the guidance of their coaches and teachers, hoping to produce personal best performances while bringing pride to their schools and districts.
With more than 1,000 athletes assembled in Ranau, the 58th MSSS Athletics Championships are expected to showcase not only fierce competition across the track and field events but also the depth of sporting talent that continues to emerge from schools throughout Sabah.
As the competition unfolds over the coming days, athletes will be aiming not only to stand atop the podium but also to earn the honour of wearing Sabah colours at the national championships, carrying with them the hopes and aspirations of their schools, districts and communities.
