Handphone thief caught red handed
The offence under Section 379 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to seven years, or a fine, or both, on conviction.
Kota Kinabalu: A 35-year-old man was fined RM3,500 or eight months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court for stealing a handphone from a hotel employee.

Ag Asmerul Aspar pleaded guilty before Magistrate Marilyn Kelvin to stealing the gadget belonging to one Jipnah Oinggoh @ Pingu at 12.30pm on July 17, at a hospitality premises here.

The court heard from the prosecution that the theft was discovered after the hotel’s chief security officer received a report that Jipnah’s handphone had gone missing from the premises on July 17.

A review of the CCTV footage showed Asmerul taking the phone.

Security personnel later traced and detained Asmerul before taking him to the security office.

A search of his bag led to the recovery of Jipnah’s handphone, which was identified by its owner.

In a separate case,  a mechanic was charged with assisting in disposing of a stolen gold necklace.

Azlyshahrin Hamrey, 40, pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Dzul Elmy Yunus to committing the at City Parade, Centre Point, at 2.45pm on July 14.

The offence under Section 414 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to seven years, or a fine, or both, on conviction.

The court released Azlyshahrin on bail of RM2,200 and fixed Sept 9 for pre-trial case management.

Inspectors Yusdi Basri and Mohamad Hamidi Mohamad Hamzah prosecuted.
