TAWAU: Three schools here have been temporarily closed following floods that affected large parts of the district, particularly low-lying areas, on Saturday.
Sabah Education Department Director Datuk Raisin Saidin said the affected schools are SK Kuala Apas, SK Batu 22 and Sekolah Agama Negeri (SAN) Apas Batu 4, adding that damage assessments are ongoing and no injuries involving pupils or teachers have been reported.
He said the safety of the school community remains the priority and that schools deemed unsafe will not be reopened until conditions improve.
Raisin said contingency measures, including Home-Based Teaching and Learning (PdPR) and replacement classes, have been identified to minimise disruption and ensure the annual 190 school days requirement is met, drawing on experience gained during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Speaking after officiating the SMK Balung Open Hall and 2025 STPM Excellence Awards ceremony on Sunday, he also praised Tawau's strong academic performance, noting that 42 STPM 2025 candidates achieved a perfect 4.0 score while stressing that educational excellence should extend beyond examination results alone.
