THREE schools have been temporarily closed following floods that hit low-lying areas in Tawau on Saturday – SK Kuala Apas, SK Batu 22 and Sekolah Agama Negeri (SAN) Apas Batu 4.
Sabah Education Director Datuk Raisin Saidin said an assessment of property damage is still ongoing and no injuries to students or teachers have been reported.
“We are giving priority to the safety of school communities before any decision is made on school operations. If a school is unsafe to enter, we will not allow students and teachers into the area,” he said.
He said several preparatory measures have been identified, including implementing Home-Based Teaching and Learning (PdPR) and replacement classes should school disruptions continue for an extended period.
The measures are aimed at ensuring students do not fall behind in their studies regardless of the circumstances, and that the required 190 school days a year can still be met.
He said the experience of implementing PdPR during the Covid-19 pandemic serves as an important guide in dealing with any future school disruptions caused by disasters.
