KOTA KINABALU: Suria Capital Holdings Berhad, together with its subsidiary, SCHB Engineering Services Sdn Bhd, the operator of Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal (JPFT), have refuted allegations that inadequate facilities and lack of preparedness were responsible for the delay of the Labuan–Kota Kinabalu ferry service.
The group in a statement said the jetty previously designated for the Labuan ferry service was decommissioned in late 2023 due to safety concerns and is no longer operational.
This decision was made to prioritise public safety and was formally communicated to the Labuan ferry operator and relevant stakeholders to ensure full awareness. Since the decommissioning, all commercial boat operations at the affected jetty have ceased.
Furthermore, neither Suria nor SCHB Engineering was informed in advance about the resumption of the Labuan–Kota Kinabalu ferry service. Consequently, the group was unable to make the necessary preparations or engage in discussions with the relevant authorities to provide input.
Datuk Ng Kiat Min, the Group Managing Director, said in the styatement: “Advance consultation would have provided an opportunity to clarify the decommissioning of the jetty and determine the best course of action, taking into account the Group’s plan to undertake a comprehensive redevelopment of the existing JPFT land, in line with its waterfront development plan.”
