TAWAU: The issue of mobile phones in Batu Payung automatically switching to a neighbouring country's network is being addressed by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
Youth, Sports and Creative Economy Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan said the problem occurs because the area is close to the Indonesian border, causing some mobile devices to switch to roaming automatically.
He said he had raised the matter with MCMC and received an assurance from Sabah MCMC Director Ratnawaty Talib that the issue was being addressed, with several locations already resolved, while one remaining area is still undergoing remedial work.
Nizam, who is also the Apas Assemblyman, commended the Sabah MCMC Director for promptly deploying officers to inspect the affected area on the same day he lodged a complaint, adding that internet connectivity in Batu Payung has since improved and expressing hope that all coverage issues will be fully resolved soon.
Earlier, Nizam said disruptions to telephone and internet services in Batu Payung and Tinagat had affected nearly 10,000 residents for a prolonged period despite telecommunication towers being built several years ago, while an MCMC site visit found that two of three Wireless Broadband Access Service (WBAS) test locations in Kampung Tinagat failed to meet the commission's mandatory standards.
