KUNAK: Kunak residents living near rivers have been urged to take precautionary measures and comply with instructions from the authorities if temporary evacuation becomes necessary.
District Officer Majaran Osman said settlements at risk of flooding include Kampung Airport Batu 10, Kampung Sungai Langgas and Kampung Sungai Atas.
Several houses in Kampung Airport along Jalan Tun Fuad were inundated with floodwaters above knee level on Saturday following continuous heavy rain and rising water levels in Sungai Kalumpang.
He said there was no need to open a temporary relief centre as monitoring by the relevant agencies found that floodwaters had begun receding since Sunday afternoon, while reminding residents near rivers to remain vigilant and follow instructions issued by the authorities from time to time.
Majaran added that the Department of Irrigation and Drainage has installed a Flood Warning System at selected locations, while Sungai Kalumpang II Water Treatment Plant temporarily suspended operations on Saturday due to high river water turbidity.
