TAWAU: An estimated 5,578 consumers were affected by treated water supply disruptions following the temporary closure of the Apas Balung 1 and 2 Water Treatment Plants (WTPs), North WTP and Cinta Mata WTP due to flooding on Saturday.
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam said operations at the Apas Balung 1 and 2 WTPs were suspended after the facilities were completely inundated, causing damage to key mechanical and electrical components.
He said the Tawau Water Department's operations and technical teams were carrying out inspections, cleaning works and repairs, while confirming that the North WTP and Cinta Mata WTP had resumed operations and were gradually increasing treated water production to help stabilise supply.
Joachim, who is also Sabah Works and Utilities Minister, said the Tawau Water Department had activated temporary mitigation measures, including deploying water tankers to affected areas, while efforts to restore supply continued and the Sabah Water Department was expediting recovery works.
He added that the State Government was strengthening Tawau's long-term water supply through the Phase III Water Supply Scheme – Tawau Dam Design and Construction Project, which is expected to be completed in October next year to support a more sustainable water supply and flood control system.
