Kota Kinabalu: Close to 4000 Filipino illegals are languishing in the five detention centres in Sabah at the expense of taxpayers following the decision by Philipine authorities to suspend the Zamboanga-Sandakan ferry service due to a tragedy that befell one of the vessels belonging to Aleson shipping lines.
They are currently held at the centres for violating Malaysia’s travel and residency requirements.
The MV Trisha Kerstin owned by the firm sank off Basilan in January, claiming nearly 100 lives.
The suspension has effectively severed the primary maritime link used for both commercial travel and official deportation exercises.
