Student in stable condition: Sabah Education Department
The department said in a statement that it is treating the incident seriously and is closely monitoring the student's welfare, safety and emotional wellbeing.
Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Education Department (JPN Sabah) confirmed a Daily Express expose that another student fell from the same secondary school in Papar on Wednesday where Zara Qairina Mahathir lost her life – and ironically on the first anniversary of the incident.

However, it did not explain the reason for the fall, except that the Form Two female student of SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha in Papar did not sustain serious injuries and is currently in stable condition.

The confirmation that she suffered no serious injuries was a relief as members of the public earlier contacted the Daily Express to find out whether it was true that she fractured her leg.

The department said in a statement that it is treating the incident seriously and is closely monitoring the student's welfare, safety and emotional wellbeing.

"The school took immediate action by providing initial assistance, notifying the student's family and the police, and securing the area to prevent panic among students and staff.

“The student underwent medical examination and received treatment at a hospital, with medical reports indicating that there were no serious injuries,” the statement said, Friday.

Psychosocial and emotional support had been extended to the student and members of the school community affected by the incident.

"The Sabah Education Department will provide its full cooperation to the authorities in the ongoing investigation," it said.

According to preliminary findings by the school, there were no indications of criminal elements or bullying in the latest incident.

JPN Sabah advised the public not to spread unverified information that could disrupt investigations and affect the wellbeing of the student, the family and the wider school community.

Zara was found unconscious near a drain at a girls’ dormitory block at the same school at about 3am on July 16, last year, after allegedly falling from the third floor of the dormitory building.

The inquest into the case heard that the late Zara was confronted by a group of students on July 15, 2025 and she was found lying unconscious on July 16.

She was admitted to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu with severe injuries and passed away on July 17.
