SANDAKAN: A proboscis monkey was found dead after it was believed to have been attacked by a pack of stray dogs at Jambatan 22, Kampung Sim Sim, recently.
The Borneo-endemic species, which is protected under Malaysian wildlife laws, was reportedly discovered by residents after being bitten by about seven stray dogs and had already sustained critical injuries.
The Sabah Wildlife Department(SWD) dispatched officers to the scene after being alerted, but the monkey succumbed to its injuries before it could be rescued, and its carcass was retrieved for further investigation and necessary action.
Meanwhile, Tanjung Papat Assemblyman Alex Thien advised residents not to approach, capture or handle wild animals that stray into residential areas, but to immediately notify the SWD so trained officers can ensure the safety of both the animals and the public.
