Kota Kinabalu: The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) said it is preparing to contest the Kota Kinabalu parliamentary seat, arguing that Sabah’s administrative, commercial and economic heartland merits focused representation that truly understands its unique priorities.
Party president Datuk Chin Su Phin said the decision to position the party for the seat stems from Kota Kinabalu’s critical role as the engine of Sabah’s economy and governance – making it a constituency that demands capable leaders ready to shoulder greater responsibilities.
“Our challenge has never been a lack of talent. The real question is whether we are prepared to step up and serve this important constituency,” he said after the joint annual general meeting of LDP’s Likas, Api-Api and Luyang divisions Saturday.
Chin stressed that LDP’s interest in the seat is not meant to create friction within the coalition, but to offer voters a credible alternative and demonstrate the party’s readiness to deliver results for the capital.
“Kota Kinabalu drives Sabah’s commerce, trade and public administration. It needs representatives who understand its complex needs – from business growth and infrastructure upgrades to the concerns of residents and workers across the city,” he added.
He noted that LDP already has a strong base of professionals, entrepreneurs and experienced community leaders across the west coast, giving the party the right pool of talent to serve the parliamentary seat effectively.
“The final decision will always be reached through coalition discussions and agreed electoral strategy, but parties must prepare ahead – opportunities belong to those who are ready to serve,” Chin said.
He added that the rising preference for Sabah-based parties shows voters want leaders who truly grasp the state’s distinct challenges and aspirations – a principle LDP stands by as it strengthens its position across the region.
