TAWAU: The government can save up to RM9 million in expenditure as a result of the Road Transport Department’s (JPJ) digitisation initiative which will be launched in stages and simultaneously across the country, said its Director General, Datuk Zailani Hashim.

He said, to begin with, the digital service initiative would only involve the Motor Vehicle License (LKM) or road tax and the Malaysian Driving License (LMM).

He said the matter took into account the use of new applications or systems to enable improvement efforts to be carried out from time to time, such as the previous MySejahtera application which faced slow access in its early stages.

He said data showed that 241,000 licences of drivers in the country would expire and 1.14 million road tax would expire and all of them are urged to renew online.

Zailani said that the implementation of the initiative would make it easier as the department would not have to open many service counters because it could be conducted online.

“This at the same time allows JPJ officers to be mobilised for other tasks such as enforcement and advocacy,” he said after the presentation of the Driver’s License Assistance (MyLesen) for Tanjung Batu and Kalabakan, Sunday.

The ceremony was officiated by the Assistant Minister of Industrial Development, Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy at the Tawau Community Hall.

Zailani was confident that the digitisation of JPJ would reduce the issue of flying licences and scammers because the tool used will show the real data by entering the vehicle number and the driver’s identification card number.

With regard to many people’s questions regarding coverage problems that could affect the smoothness of JPJ’s digitisation, he said they used special SMED (Smart Enforcement Device) equipment on the field to check drivers’ information through vehicle plate numbers and identification card numbers.

“Drivers are also allowed to print LKM or driver’s license to keep in their vehicles to make it easier for them if there is no coverage in a certain location or the mobile phone runs out of battery and so on... But we can check (data) using SMED equipment,” he said.

Zailani said, however, they would not arbitrarily take action until the community really understood and is comfortable with the JPJ digitisation initiative.

He said, they would carry out advocacy efforts to enforce literacy regarding the initiative, and only then would it be implemented more seriously.

Meanwhile, a total of 491 from the B40 group aged between 17 and 60 received their respective B2 licenses at the event.

Andi said the registration for the programme was on Dec 8, last year and implemented from Dec 10-31, targeting young people who had just obtained their driver’s licence for the first time.

Through the MyLesen initiative, he said, the participants were given training and disciplinary awareness in complying with road regulations, which at the same time benefited the participants.

The programme involved collaboration between the State Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Tawau Driving Institute as well as the Kalabakan Parliamentary Office.

Andi said that the programme received encouraging response from the local community and hoped that it would also be widely disseminated in other parliamentary constituencies in order to raise awareness of the importance of having a driving license and safety on the road.

“As drivers or motorcyclists, we need to understand the responsibility that we share the same road. If all parties are careful on the road, it will certainly reduce the rate of accidents, especially among motorcyclists,” he said.

Touching on the road tax and driver’s license (LMM) digital service initiative, he described the effort as a good opportunity for the community’s convenience towards a proactive country.

He was of the opinion that other departments should also emulate the efforts of JPJ, especially in relation to licences because it made it easier for people to deal with without having to queue at service counters.

In conjunction with the programme, Andi also flagged off 50 motorcyclists as a symbolic launch of the programme.
