Aunt testifies Zara shared alleged bullying, hostel issues
KOTA KINABALU: The Coroner’s Court heard testimony from Zara Qairina Mahathir’s aunt, Nur Shira Abdullah, 45, who said Zara confided during 2025 Hari Raya about alleged bullying, hostel disturbances and claims that complaints to wardens were ignored.

Nur Shira, the 71st witness, said Zara described student fights, dorm disruptions, missing money, and being disturbed while sleeping, based on a roommate’s account.

Zara also reportedly mentioned being asked to fetch water from another floor late at night due to a downstairs filter.

She said Zara remained calm but uneasy when sharing the incidents. Nur Shira advised her to inform her mother and hostel wardens, and later relayed the concerns to Zara’s mother.

She added that Zara had a close relationship with her mother, was open about personal issues, and showed no signs of family conflict, appearing more mature and independent after entering secondary school.
