PENAMPANG: A 47-year-old local died in an accident involving his motorcycle and a car along Jalan Kota Kinabalu-Papar, near Km 17, early Monday.
Acting Penampang District Police Chief ASP Arisanti Aziz said initial investigations found the car, driven by a 22-year-old local man travelling from Kota Kinabalu towards Papar, is believed to have lost control before hitting the motorcycle around 3.30am.
The motorcycle was dragged along the road and caught fire following the collision, while the rider was flung onto the road and suffered severe injuries.
The rider was pronounced dead at the scene by a medical officer. The body has been sent for post-mortem.
Police have detained the car driver to assist with investigations.
Arisanti called on witnesses to come forward and contact the investigating officer, Inspector Saparia Ladoni, at 019-8095133.
She also urged the public to refrain from circulating photographs of the accident scene out of respect for the victim’s family.
