Kota Kinabalu: The president of a non-governmental organisation (NGO) has been arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Sabah over the alleged misappropriation of about RM2 million allocated for the construction of a hall.

A source said the man, in his 60s, was detained at about 10am on Tuesday when he turned up to give his statement at the Sabah MACC office.

Initial investigations found that the suspect allegedly misused an allocation obtained from the Finance Ministry in 2022 to build a cultural hall and gallery in the State, and is believed to have applied for and carried out the project without the approval of the organisation's Supreme Council.

Sabah MACC Director Datuk Mohd Fuad Bee Basrah confirmed the arrest when contacted.

He said the suspect is expected to be charged at the Kota Kinabalu Special Corruption Court on Thursday, with the case being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009.
