TAWAU: A 24-year-old Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Shah Alam student was killed in a road accident while travelling to his industrial training placement at the Tawau District Education Office on Tuesday morning.
Acting Tawau Police Chief Supt Wilynton Enchana Watt said Mazlan Tuwo died after the Yamaha 135LC motorcycle he was riding was involved in a collision with a Mitsubishi Triton four-wheel drive on Jalan Tawau-Bombalai near Kampung Haji Matahir at about 7.30am.
He said the victim was travelling from Merotai towards the District Education Office, while the 32-year-old female civil servant driving the four-wheel drive was heading from Kampung Sungai Imam to the Felda Umas Health Clinic when she allegedly lost control of the vehicle, crossed into the opposite lane and collided with the motorcycle.
The impact caused the four-wheel drive to overturn into a roadside drain, while the victim and his motorcycle were thrown about five metres onto the road shoulder towards Tawau town, and he was pronounced dead at the scene by Ministry of Health medical personnel, while the driver suffered serious injuries, including fractures to her right shoulder and arm, and was taken to Tawau Hospital for treatment.
Wilynton said the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving, and urged all road users to drive responsibly, obey speed limits and remain fully attentive to help prevent similar tragedies.
