TAWAU: Two men who attended an illegal street racing event as spectators were fined a total of RM2,000 for traffic offences after appearing in court on Friday.
Faisal Asbi, 22, and Muhammad Zulkifli Mohd Yusup, 20, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Don Stiwin Malanjum to separate charges.
Faisal was fined RM1,000, or one month’s jail in default, for riding a motorcycle without a valid licence. He was also fined RM500, or two weeks’ jail in default, for failing to display his motorcycle’s registration number.
Muhammad was fined RM500, or two weeks’ jail in default, for failing to display his motorcycle’s registration number.
The offences were uncovered when the two went to the Tawau District Police Headquarters Traffic Office at about 9.30am on July 20 to claim motorcycles seized during an “Ops Samseng Jalanan” conducted at 1Arena, Jalan Chong Thien Vun, at 12.53am on July 19.
Faisal was charged under Section 26(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for riding without a valid driving licence and under Section 14(1) of the same Act for failing to display his motorcycle’s registration number.

In mitigation, both men asked for leniency, saying they were still paying motorcycle instalments and had only gone to the location to watch the illegal street race.
However, prosecuting officer ASP Joan Lee of the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence to deter similar offences.
She said 11 motorcycles were seized during the operation after their owners abandoned them and fled upon noticing the police.
Joan added that illegal street races would not attract participants without spectators and warned that such activities posed a danger not only to racers but also to other road users.
