SANDAKAN: A proboscis monkey was found dead after suffering severe injuries believed to have been inflicted by a pack of stray dogs at Jambatan 22, Kampung Sim Sim, recently.
The monkey, which is endemic to Borneo and protected under Malaysian wildlife laws, was reportedly discovered by residents after it was attacked and bitten by about seven stray dogs. By the time it was found, the animal had already sustained critical injuries.
Upon receiving information on the incident, the Sabah Wildlife Department in Sandakan was immediately alerted and dispatched officers to the scene to carry out rescue and handling operations.
However, despite the swift response, the proboscis monkey succumbed to its injuries before it could be saved therefore
Wildlife Department personnel retrieve the carcass from the area for further investigation and necessary action.
Appreciation was extended to the Sandakan Wildlife Department for its prompt response, as well as to all personnel and volunteers who assisted in managing the incident.
The public has been reminded that proboscis monkeys are protected wildlife and play an important role in Sabah’s biodiversity.
Meanwhile, Tanjung Papat assemblyman, Alex Thien advised residents not to approach, capture or attempt to handle wild animals that stray into residential areas.
Instead, they should immediately notify the Sabah Wildlife Department so that trained officers can take appropriate action to ensure the safety of both the animals and the public while promoting harmonious coexistence between humans and wildlife.
