Transit centre for jobless grads: Cabinet to decide on PPR tenants next week
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor said the issue and proposal will be brought to the State Cabinet meeting to be discussed carefully and a decision taken.
Kota Kinabalu: The State Cabinet will make a decision next week regarding the Housing and Urban Development Board’s (LPPB) proposal to ask tenants of the People’s Housing Programme (PPR) for more than 10 years to vacate their homes.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor said the issue and proposal will be brought to the State Cabinet meeting to be discussed carefully and a decision taken.

“Although there is a warning from the Audit Department, we are of the opinion that we cannot ask tenants over 10 years to vacate the house. “This is because those who live in PPR rental houses are those who still need a place to live and so on.

“We are waiting for the State Cabinet’s decision next week but, in principle, we will ensure that their fate is protected,” he said, after closing the Sabah Student Consultative Council (MPPS) Conference at Ming Garden Hotel, on Thursday.

Present with the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah, Sarawak Affairs and Special Duties) Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Sabah, Datuk Dr Haji Mohd Arifin Haji Mohd Arif and State Government Secretary, Datuk Seri Panglima Sr Haji Safar Untong.

He also said the State Government agreed to establish Rumah Transit Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) for students looking for work after graduating.

He said the proposal will be extended to the Ministry of Local Government and Housing so that it can be created in PPRs currently under construction.

“We have many more PPRs that have not been completed like in Inanam. So to begin with, we inform the Ministry to prepare 50 units for example out of 1,000 units reserved for these transit houses with a minimum fee,” he said.

The provision of the transit house is one of the suggestions put forward by the MPPS participants at their conference this time, aimed at easing the burden of graduates who are looking for work to get a house with a low rental rate.

Earlier, Hajiji emphasised the State Government’s commitment to developing human capital as one of the main points outlined in the SMJ Direction development plan. He said that various incentives were created to help in the development of the relevant sector, including cash assistance to less able students when continuing their studies with large allocations every year.

He also described the program with university student leaders from Sabah in conjunction with the MPPS conference last night as part of the initiative human capital development in the direction of SMJ.

“We cannot run away from this human capital because our children will be our heirs in the future. That is the focus of our government on developing human capital.

“This program is our way of developing the minds of Sabah university students held for the second time.

“During the three-day session here, many motions were presented. I see and take note and action on any motion that we think needs to be prioritized because the voice of young people is very important for Sabah.

“We not only listen to the voices and views of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other organizations but also listen to the voices of these young people and give them priority,” he said.

He said the government needs to help young people to ensure they have the expertise and skills needed in Sabah through the studies in university.
