Kota Kinabalu: A fire broke out at the food court in Bataras Kolombong at 11am on Wednesday, sending breakfast diners fleeing and leaving one person rushed to the hospital after attempting to put out the flames.
The fire was believed to have happened at the Kak Yan kitchen area on the first floor of the food court area, which was crowded with breakfast customers at the time.
Chicken rice seller Pauline Chong, who saw the incident, said a person tried to douse the fire but was unsuccessful and subsequently fainted.
The individual was taken to the hospital, though their condition has not been confirmed.
The fire triggered the building’s sprinkler system, which sprayed water throughout the area and left the floors wet. Smoke from the fire was extracted through the premises’ ventilation system.
Chong said the food court was packed with people having breakfast when the fire broke out, with many customers rushing out before finishing their meals.

She said four of her whole fried chickens were ruined after being soaked in water during the incident, and she plans to give them away for free to anyone who wants them.
Firefighters from Lintas, Kota Kinabalu and Penampang were deployed to the scene. Also there to assist were the police and Sabah Electricity.
The fire was brought under control at 12.30pm, with operations ending at 1.35pm.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
