Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Golf and Country Club (SGCC) recently hosted a Tree Planting Ceremony in partnership with the Sabah Timber Industries Association (STIA), marking the donation of 300 tree seedlings.
The event highlights SGCC’s ongoing commitment to environmental conservation and enhancing its golf course’s natural beauty.

The ceremony began with a symbolic planting by committees from both organisations, demonstrating their shared dedication to environmental stewardship.
SGCC’s leadership, including President Andrew Yap Kim Phin and Captain Ng Loong Fah, along with STIA’s representatives, led by President Tan Peng Juan, planted the first Laran and Batai seedlings.
Tan said that this initiative contributes to the government’s ‘100 Million Tree Planting Campaign’ launched in 2021.
“Sabah has already planted 19.5 million trees towards its goal of 40 million by 2025, ranking second in Malaysia behind Sarawak,” he said.

He said STIA has been actively promoting environmental awareness in schools to engage the younger generation.
Meanwhile, STIA Deputy President Rahman Khan, explained the choice of Laran and Batai trees, noting their rapid growth and significant carbon dioxide absorption capabilities.
“These species are part of Malaysia’s Plantation Programme, supporting both environmental health and the local timber industry,” said Rahman.
Ng expressed gratitude for STIA’s contribution, highlighting that this initiative aligns with the club’s vision of transforming its golf course into a nature park.
“The new trees will enhance the landscape, providing a more sustainable and serene environment for golfers and visitors,” said Ng.
The collaboration between SGCC and STIA represents a significant step in local environmental conservation efforts, contributing to a greener future for the region.
