Kota Kinabalu: The Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS), together with Sabah Electricity (SE) and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), raided a premises in Kota Kinabalu on Tuesday for allegedly conducting bitcoin mining activities using an illegal electricity connection.
In a statement on Wednesday, nine bitcoin mining machines and other equipment, including cables and switchboards used to make an illegal electricity connection from SE's supply line, with an estimated value of RM100,000, were seized during the operation.

The case is being investigated under Sections 61(3) and 61(8) of the Electricity Supply Enactment 2024.
An offence under Section 61(3) carries a fine of not less than RM20,000 and not more than RM1 million, imprisonment for up to five years, or both, while Section 61(8) provides for a fine of up to RM50,000, imprisonment for up to one year, or both.
SE estimated losses from the unbilled electricity consumption at about RM15,000 a month.
