Kota Kinabalu: Kota Belud has been recognised as part of the Kinabalu Unesco Global Geopark (KUGGp) since May 2023, with efforts underway to strengthen the conservation and promotion of the district's cultural heritage, the State Legislative Assembly was told on Tuesday.

(pic) said Sabah Parks introduced the Geopark Tamu initiative to promote the Kota Belud Tamu, local culture, handicrafts and community-based products while boosting tourism and the local economy.

Responding to Tempasuk assemblyman Datuk Mohd Arsad Bistari, he said recognising the Kota Belud Tamu as a Unesco World Heritage Site would require comprehensive research, extensive preparation and a lengthy process.
He said the nomination must be supported by detailed heritage studies, documentation, historical and scientific evidence, and proof of Outstanding Universal Value before it could be considered by Unesco.
Replying to Bugaya assemblyman Jamil Hamzah, Andi said the Ministry would assess the proposal to nominate the Bajau community's cultural heritage in Semporna, including the traditional lepa boat-making craft, before informing the assemblyman of its decision.
