TAWAU: A 17-year-old male SPM school leaver has been remanded for four days to assist investigations into the discovery of a newborn baby girl found crying in bushes near a house in Kampung Jawa on Tuesday.
Magistrate Don Stiwin Malanjum granted the remand order on Wednesday following an application by Tawau District Police Headquarters (IPD) investigating officer Insp Robiatul Adawiyah Japri to facilitate investigations under Section 317 of the Penal Code, including the collection of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) samples.

According to the case facts, the baby, believed to have been recently born, was found by members of the public at about 6am before a Health Ministry ambulance took her to Tawau Hospital for treatment.
Police later arrested the teenage boy and a 15-year-old girl at about 10.40pm and 11.10pm on the same day near the location where the baby was found.
The girl's condition is being treated at Tawau Hospital, while she is under a 14-day remand by the Immigration Department for not possessing valid identification documents.
