Kota Kinabalu: The State Government is studying the feasibility of building a tourism jetty in Tawau to provide an alternative boat route for visitors travelling to the islands off Semporna.
Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin said the Ministry is assessing the proposed project's location and long-term viability.
He said the Ministry has also applied to the Federal Government for funding to upgrade the Semporna Tourism Jetty to cater for increasing tourist arrivals.
Replying to Justin Wong (Sri Tanjong) during question time in the State Legislative Assembly on Thursday, Jafry said the Ministry would continue working with local authorities and the Ports and Harbours Department on tourism jetty development.
He expressed hope that the Federal Government would give favourable consideration to the application to upgrade the Semporna Tourism Jetty.
