Kota Kinabalu: Cryptocurrency mining assets worth RM100,000 were seized in a raid on a premises here allegedly involved in carrying out illegal bitcoin mining activities.
The joint operation by the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS), Sabah Electricity (SE) and police seized nine bitcoin mining machines, along with cables, switchboards and other equipment allegedly used to illegally tap electricity from Sabah Electricity’s power supply.
“The seized items are estimated to be worth RM100,000.
“Sabah Electricity estimates that unbilled electricity losses resulting from the illegal connection amount to approximately RM15,000 per month,” ECoS said in a statement.
The case is being investigated under Sections 61(3) and 61(8) of the Electricity Supply Enactment 2024.
Under Section 61(3), offenders convicted of the offence can be fined between RM20,000 and RM1 million, jailed for up to five years, or both.
