TAWAU: An Indonesian man was charged in the Magistrate’s Court here on Wednesday with trafficking nearly 75kg of syabu.
No plea was recorded from mechanic Sopian Mustafa, 40, who nodded to indicate he understood the charge after it was read to him before Magistrate Don Stiwin Malanjum.
Sopian is accused of trafficking 74,866 gram of syabu at the parking area of a building along Jalan Tun Hamdan, here at about 10.30pm on July 12 this year.
The charge was framed under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same Act, carries the death penalty or life imprisonment and, if the death penalty is not imposed, not fewer than 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction.
The court fixed Aug 20 for further mention of the case pending the chemist report on the drug.
No bail was offered to Sopian as the charge against him has no provision for bail.

Prosecuting Officer ASP Nur Intan Jamrin, appeared for the prosecution, while Sopian was represented by counsel Prem Elmer Ganasan.
